Nick Jensen is one of several up and coming blueliners hoping to establish themselves during the NHL exhibition season. Mitch Callahan wants to be known for how he plays the game and not the grisly photo he posted of himself on Twitter shortly after taking a Ryan Sproul slapshot to the mouth last spring. The 6-foot, 195 pound winger broke his jaw and lost multiple teeth, but wanted to post the photo to show friends and family he was alright despite the horrific injury.

It was no surprise that at age 20, Xavier Ouellet became the youngest player to dress for the Red Wings last season. The 6-foot, 200 pound defenseman played four regular season games and one playoff game for Detroit.

“It was a big learning experience,” he said. “I felt like I was NHL ready to start the season but it is a coaches decision. Everytime they called me up to Detroit I was the happiest guy on the planet.”

Last year at this time, Andrej Nestrasil’s career with the Red Wings didn’t look so bright. The 75th overall selection in the 2009 NHL draft hadn’t been able to crack the AHL full time, spending the bulk of his first two professional seasons in Toledo of the ECHL. The fact that the Red Wings named Zach Nastasiuk an alternate captain says a lot for his leadership abilities. The 19 year-old was chosen ahead of several players who have more years of hockey experience because of his leadership ability and work ethic.

“We think he’s a natural leader,” Griffins Head Coach Jeff Blashill said. “He just has a quality about him that makes others follow him. It isn’t something you teach.”

The Detroit Red Wings have announced their 2014 training camp roster held at Centre I.C.E. Arena in Traverse City, MI.  Daniel Alfredsson, who may still re-sign with Detroit, is not participating in training camp but could be signed before the season opens. Also included on the roster are nine free agent tryouts including Aaron Rome, Brandon Robinson and  Joe Hicketts.
