On the Bubble: Griffins Face Tough Roster Choices

This year’s edition of the Grand Rapid’s Griffins might just be the deepest in years – at least on paper. The team could field the Red Wings top three prospects in Brendan Smith, Tomas Tatar, and Gustav Nyquist. Additionally the Griffins will be bolstered by AHL veterans that include the likes of Doug Janek, Joey MacDonald, Chris Minard, Jamie Johnson, Chris Conner, Garnet Excelby and Greg Amadio.

Numbers Game: Nyquist Sent to Grand Rapids

Gustav Nyquist did everything right in his first NHL training camp and preseason. The 22 year-old forward elevated his game from leading the Red Wings prospects in scoring at the NHL prospect tournament to producing points playing along side NHL forwards during the preseason. Despite his stellar performance Detroit management believe in developing players slowly, thus opting to send Nyquist to Grand Rapids of the AHL to start the season.

Turning the Page: Healthy Ferraro Ready For Next Step

For the first time in two years, Landon Ferraro is starting the year healthy. Since being drafted 32nd overall by the Red Wings in 2009, he’s battled one nagging injury after another which he admits have derailed his past two seasons.

First Cuts: Wings Trim Roster by 10

The Detroit Red Wings have sent 7 players back to their junior teams. These players include: Brooks Macek, Richard Nedomlel, Ryan Sproul, Petr Mrazek, Xavier Ouellet, Alan Quine, and Marek Tvordon. Additionally the Red Wings released the following players from their try-out contracts: Zach Franko, Artem Sergeev, and Evan Mosher. Ramis Sadikov and Nick Oslund are still listed with the team and could still be signed by the Red Wings.  The cuts bring the Wings roster down to 56 players.

Team Howe Beats Team Lindsay 6-3

Team Howe beat Team Lindsay by a 6-3 margin. Johan Franzen had two goals while Chris Conner had a goal and and assist to lead Team Howe to a win on Monday afternoon. Tomas Tatar, Doug Janik and Ian White also scored for Team Howe. Todd Bertuzzi, Zach Franko, and Nick Oslund scored for Team Lindsay. TC Red and White Lineup Announced

The Detroit Red Wings have announced the lineup for the Traverse City Red and White game which will be held at noon on Tuesday September 20th at Centre I.C.E. Arena in Traverse City, MI. Of the names on the list, only rookie Tomas Jurco is a surprise. The Red Wings are likely taking a longer look at Jurco due to the injury he suffered during the prospect tournament. Team Delvecchio Beats Team Howe 2-1

This was the start that Free Agent Tryout, Fabian Brunnstrom needed. Brunnstrom scored the game winning goal for team Delvecchio leading the team to a 2-1 victory on Sunday. Patrick Eaves scored the other goal on hard slapper. Valtteri Filppula had the lone goal for Team Howe. Goalie Petr Mrazek was in net for team Howe for both goals.
