Detroit Red Wings Invite Eight to NHL Prospect Tournament and Training Camp
The Detroit Red Wings have invited eight free agents to round out their roster for the NHL Prospect Tournament beginning in Traverse City on September 7th.
Among those auditioning are offensive forwards Pavel Gogolev (pictured) and Nicolas Guay. Also included on this years roster are a handful of players inked to AHL contracts including Marcus Crawford, Trevor Hamilton, Jordan Topping and Trevor Yates.
Following is a review of the invitees (listed alphabetically).
- Marcus Crawford – The 5-foot-11, 190 pound defenseman finished his fourth and final year with Saginaw of the OHL. The 21 year-old is an offensive defensemen who can distribute the puck and generate offense. His 121 career assists were the second most in Saginaw’s history. Crawford inked a two-year deal with the Griffins this past spring.
- Justin Fazio – The 6-foot-1, 188 pound goalie wrapped up his OHL career as the franchise leader in wins for the Sarnia Sting recording 92 wins in 176 starts. The 21 year-old signed an amateur try-out contract with the Griffins last spring but didn’t appear in any games. Fazio attended the Red Wings and Calgary Flames development camps earlier this summer, but he has yet to ink an NHL contract.
- Pavel Gogolev – The 6-foot-1, 175 pound winger is an offensive forward who is still adapting his game to the North American rinks. The Moscow, Russia native wasn’t selected in the June NHL Entry draft despite tallying decent numbers last season – 30 goals and 47 points in 66 games with the Peterborough Petes of the OHL. Pegged to be picked as high as the fourth round, Gogolev slipped through the draft likely due to his lack of consistency and the fact that he played for a dismal Peterborough team.
- Maxim Golod – The 5-foot-11, 164 pound forward attended the Red Wings development camp earlier this summer. Golod is a good skater with good hands, but like many young players he needs to develop his defensive game. The Concord Ontario native was passed over in the draft this past June and he is hoping an extended look will be his ticket to an NHL contract.
- Nicolas Guay – The 5-foot-11, 174 pound forward is a hardworking offensive forward. The 19 year-old center scored 29 goals and 55 points in 68 QMJHL games last season. Guay was a free agent tryout last year with the New Jersey Devils, but wasn’t able to translate the experience into an NHL contract.
- Trevor Hamilton – The 6-foot, 187 pound defenseman is well rounded defenseman who plays a two-way game. The former Big Ten defenseman of the year led the nation in blocked shots in the past two seasons with 107 and 109 respectively. Hamilton’s NCAA career wasn’t exactly normal leaving Miami of Ohio after two years to play in the USHL only to return to finish his final two years of eligibility at Penn State. The Michigan native signed a one year deal with Grand Rapids this spring and participated in Detroit’s development camp.
- Jordan Topping – The 6-foot-1, 198 pound forward plays with an edge to his game. The hard working forward netted 38 goals and 80 points in 72 games with Tri-City of the WHL last season. Topping signed a one year deal with Grand Rapids this spring.
- Trevor Yates – The 6-foot-2, 201 pound forward is an offensive player who is particularly effective on the power play. Yates, who is the son of the former coach of the Syracuse Crunch Ross Yates, signed a one year deal with Grand rapids after completing his senior year at Cornell University.
